FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Whapmagoostui, Qc – April 23, 2025 – On Tuesday April 22nd, at approximately 22h20, officers of Eeyou Eenou Police Force of the Whapmagoostui detachment responded to a call for an individual found laying on the ground and needing help.

At their arrival, EEPF suspected that it may be the result of a vehicle hit and run and immediately requested medical assistance from the first responders. The victim was transported to the local clinic where he shortly afterwards succumbed to his injuries. The person was identified as Mr John Kawapit.

With the assistance of the Nunavik Police Services, EEPF officers conducted an investigation with possible eyewitnesses in the area.

At approximately 10 a.m. this morning, April 23rd, a person was arrested and apprehended in link with these events.

Further investigation will be conducted by the Sûreté du Québec’s Major Crimes Unit.

We would like to thank the Nunavik Police Services, first responders and the Whapmagoostui clinic for their efforts. We also want to take a moment sending our condolences to the families, friends and community members impacted by this tragic event.
