Alcohol Seized Following Vehicle Interception in Mistissini
On September 17, 2026 , the Eeyou Eenou Police conducted an alcohol-related enforcement operation in Mistissini on September 17, 2026, resulting in the seizure of a case of vodka and the issuance of a by-law infraction.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., police received information concerning a vehicle reportedly travelling to Mistissini after an alcohol purchase in Chibougamau. The information indicated that the vehicle was a black Nissan Pathfinder and a female was named to be an active bootlegger in Mistissini.
An investigator conducted surveillance of the access road into the community. A vehicle matching the description was subsequently observed entering Mistissini and was intercepted on Queen Street.
During the traffic stop, the investigating officer observed a rear passenger appearing to conceal an item in the rear area of the vehicle. A subsequent inspection of the vehicle located a sealed case of Smirnoff Vodka containing 12 bottles of 750 ml each, situated beside grocery bags.
Officers informed the driver and passenger of the nature of the investigation and explained the applicable provisions of the Alcohol By-Law, including:
- Section 121.3 — Prohibition on the Sale or Exchange of Alcoholic Beverages, which prohibits the sale or exchange of alcoholic beverages on Category 1-A lands of the Nation.
- Section 121.8 — Transportation of Alcoholic Beverages, which provides authority for a peace officer, where there are reasonable grounds to believe alcoholic beverages are present in a vehicle, to require the vehicle to stop and inspect the alcoholic beverages being transported. The provision also permits the seizure of alcoholic beverages possessed or transported in contravention of applicable laws.
As a result of the investigation, police seized:
- One sealed case of Smirnoff Vodka
- 12 × 750 ml bottles
The estimated street value of the seized alcohol is approximately $960. Street prices may vary depending on the time and circumstances of sale.
A $1,000 by-law infraction was issued in relation to the investigation.
The Eeyou Eenou Police reminds community members that the transportation, possession, sale, or exchange of alcoholic beverages may be subject to applicable provincial laws and community by-laws.
