Eastmain, Eeyou Istchee – June 1, 2026

On May 29, 2026, members of the Eeyou Eenou Police Force (EEPF) of the Eastmain detachment responded to a call received in the early afternoon concerning gunshots in the community.

Upon arrival and after assessing the situation, officers were able to identify the source of the gunfire. They approached the residence with caution, resulting in a brief standoff. One adult male was subsequently arrested without incident and taken into custody.

The individual, Thyron Whiskeychan, 37, appeared before a judge by telephone and was formally charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:
–        Negligent use of a firearm
–        Unsafe storage of a firearm

Mr Whiskeychan remained in custody and was transferred to the Amos Detention Centre. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on June 1, 2026.

No injuries were reported.

Eeyou Eenou Police Force would like to remind the public of the importance of handling and storing all firearms safely, separately, and in accordance with the Firearms Act.
