Press Release – Waskaganish Qc, May 28, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Waskaganish, Qc – May 28, 2024 – Members of the Eeyou Eenou Police Force of the Waskaganish detachment responded to a call at 4:22 p.m. on May 25, 2024 regarding a physical altercation between two male individuals.

While attending the call, one male fled the scene and officers spoke with the other male and the call ended with no criminal charges.

Just over 2 hours later at 6.25 p.m. the Eeyou Eenou Police Force of the Waskaganish Detachment received a call from a person requesting an ambulance by the riverbank.

The person in medical distress at the river bank was the same individual from the previous call concerning the physical altercation.

The individual was transported to the local clinic where he was later pronounced deceased.

With the assistance of the Sûreté du Québec, the scene was immediately protected.

The Eeyou Eenou Police Force and the Sûrete du Québec informed the Bureau des Enquêtes Indépendantes (BEI) of the event.  This is the procedure when a person, other than a police officer on-duty, dies or suffers a serious injury during a police intervention or detention by police officers.

Both E.E.P.F. and S.Q. are collaborating with the B.E.I. to ensure cooperation in their investigation.
